Whether Goole is in line to receive an official travellers' site still remains unanswered, amidst news this week that the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) has received funding for a permanent site elsewhere in the county.

A new travellers' site is to be built at Bridlington to replace the existing one on nearby Woldgate.

That site has to be moved because the land and watercourses surrounding it has become contaminated from a nearby landfill facility.

The Council has been given a grant of £1.4m from the Government to replace the travellers' site. The money comes as part of £56m available from the Government to provide new and refurbished sites, but throws previous reports that Goole could receive a permanent site into question.

ERYC has previously announced that it plans to carry out a traveller-needs survey to assess the demand for new sites across the regions.

Goole was one of the towns earmarked for this survey; there have been several cases where illegal travellers' camps at Goole have caused problems with trespass and dumped rubbish.

But Cllr Jane Evison, ERYC housing portfolio holder, told the Goole Times this week: "The replacement travellers' site in Bridlington is the only site that has seen an application for funding submitted by us at present.

"I can categorically say that no applications for funding relating to sites in Goole have been submitted to the government, although it is impossible to say what will happen in the future."
