A Goole businesswoman was left shocked last week after the building she works from sprang a leak and revealed a crime.

Melania Branford, who owns Toffs Gents Barbers in Victoria Street, was dismayed when the roof of the salon started leaking during the heavy downpour last Thursday, meaning she had to close the shop for the afternoon.

But on closer inspection, Melania was more shocked to find that the leak had been caused by thieves, who had stolen a strip of lead flashing from the roof and had dislodged a number of tiles in the process.

"They have stolen half of the lead from the gully and removed the tiles to get to the leading," said Melania.

"Water has been coming through the roof because of the heavy rain. It's terrible. The public has to know that these thefts are taking place in Goole - if they can steal from this building, they can steal from anywhere."

A spokesperson for Humberside Police told the Goole Times this week that there had been a spate of lead thefts around the country recently, as the metal can be sold on at a high price.

It is thought that the latest spate of thefts, which include copper cable stolen from railway lines and drain covers from roads, is being fuelled by the rising prices for scrap.

The police spokesperson said: "There is every chance that someone will have seen this theft being committed.

"The theft of lead has become a problem across the country as the value of lead has increased. Humberside Police has been running operations to raise awareness of scrap dealers in an effort to reduce the market for the lead thieves.

"We appeal for anyone who has knowledge about this or other thefts, or the dealing of stolen lead in the county, should contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222."
