Local marine dies in Afghanistan
A member of the Royal Marines has been killed in action while in southern Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal Michael Jones (26), from North Newbald, suffered fatal injuries on Sunday July 29 while fighting members of the Taliban in the Nimruz Province.
He was a member of the elite Special Boat Service and his parent unit was the Royal Marines.
Paying tribute to the young marine, his commanding officer said: "Michael was a truly exceptional Junior Non-Commissioned Officer, the best at his level, who unflinchingly stood, time after time, shoulder to shoulder with his friends in the very worst of conditions.
"It will be impossible to replace Michael.
"He will be remembered as a genuine and loyal friend whose selfless bravery whilst assaulting a formidable Taliban position is an example to us all."
Defence secretary Des Browne added: "Lance-Corporal Jones was an experienced and courageous Royal Marine.
"His significant contribution towards the defence of his country will not be forgotten and his loss will be felt by all who knew him.
"My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and comrades."
L/Cpl Jones, who was born on February 2, 1981, grew up in Newbald and joined the Royal Marines six days after his eighteenth birthday. During his eight years of service he served on operations in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Around 30 Taliban fighters were killed in the operation in which he died and three other members of the SBS were injured.
David Davis, MP for Haltemprice and Howden, paid tribute to L/Cpl Jones saying that the country should be proud of his heroism.
Tributes have already been paid to the young marine.
Villagers in Newbald have been left shocked by the tragedy and the village sub postmistress, Bridget Bakes, said that L/Cpl Jones had loved being a marine.
Another resident said he was very proud to be a marine and always liked to be in the thick of things.
David Davis, MP for Haltemprice and Howden, is a former member of the Territorial SAS, said that L/Cpl would have had to been extremely skilled to have made it through the initial training course.
He has described his death as a "terrible tragedy" and said the country should be proud of his heroic actions.
