Grades go up at Trinity
Students at a Thorne school have shown a significant improvement in achievement in maths and science. Results from SATs taken by year nine at Trinity Academy have increased on average by ten per cent this year compared to 2006.
Staff said the performance was in part due to special events put on to focus students on learning and to help parents understand better how they could help their children through the year.
The increase was 11 per cent for the higher level six grade in science while at level seven, the highest grade possible in science, the figure more than doubled from six per cent to 14 per cent.
Academy principal Ian Brew said the performance was down to hard work by students and staff and greater involvement by parents.
He said: "This level of improvement is very significant and just shows what can be achieved. Last year's tests came during our first year of opening and while we were still able to maintain SATs performance through the upheaval we knew more could be done."
Mr Brew added: "It's especially pleasing to see such good results in science which, nationally, is suffering a downturn. There is still more work to be done, particularly at raising achievement at the higher levels in maths, but this is an excellent foundation going forward."
