An appeal against the alleged unauthorised erection of a lighting gantry in Main Road, Eastrington has been made to the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol.

It appears to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) that without planning permission, a lighting gantry was erected in Main Road, Eastrington within the last four years.

ERYC claims that the unauthorised structure has an unacceptable visual impact upon the character of the locality, and the size and appearance of the unauthorised structure causes material harm to this part of the rural landscape.

It is also claimed that the lighting gantry is positioned close to the highway, so as to cause a potential distraction to users of the adjoining highway.

But appellant Wilcocks Contractors Ltd claims that the gantry has been erected for the purposes of displaying an illuminated sign relating to the nearby industrial estate, and a retrospective application for gantry and sign is to be submitted to the Council shortly.

The appeal process got underway on June 18, and is to be decided on the basis of an exchange of written statements by the appellant and ERYC, and by a site visit from an inspector appointed by the Secretary of State.
