Four Vermuyden School students are over the moon after being promised £25,500 for a new BMX track at West Park.

Matthew Tate, Adam Youngman, Jamie Nelson and Paddy Nutbrown started by writing letters arguing their case, with the help of English teacher Gavin Clark.

Mr Clark sent letters to the Goole Times and Goole Town Council, using parts of the students' individual letters. Cllr Kester Dean became involved and went to school to talk to the students about why the bmx track might be possible.

The students presented their ideas to Goole Town councillors recently - with great success. All the councillors agreed that the bmx fanatics should be awarded the money for a better track to improve their skills. The group also plans to create a club and to organise competitions.

Mr Clark said: "Our original aim was to get this bmx track. This has shown the students the importance of English and what can be done if they put their mind to it." (26-07-55 GT)
