A Goole woman has lodged a complaint against the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust after claiming she was so appalled by the way she was treated as a patient at Scunthorpe Hospital last week that she discharged herself.

Deborah Tabiner, who suffers from the neurological disorder Guillain Barré Syndrome, was admitted to Scunthorpe Hospital last Tuesday, July 17, when she suffered a relapse of the condition. She says she was so disgusted, not only by the way she was treated by some members of staff, but by the state of the hospital, that she discharged herself three days later.

Mrs Tabiner, a healthcare manager from Goole, found it difficult being admitted to Scunthorpe Hospital as she is the lactating mother of a six-week-old baby boy. After being placed on two medical wards where she could not breast-feed her child, Deborah was moved to a post-natal ward as a medical patient so that she could care for her son.

But Deborah told the Goole Times this week that some nursing staff on the post-natal ward were not happy with thatdecision. She said: "A nurse came to tend to me on the post-natal ward and told me, in a nasty manner, that I shouldn't be on that ward as I was taking up a valuable maternity bed. She gestured at my son whilst telling me that I was only there because I was feeding 'him'.

"I was the talk of the ward, and that wasn't fair. The nurse told me that there were other women that needed my bed and that is a breach of confidentiality; I shouldn't have been told that.

"I felt as though I shouldn't have been there. If I needed anything, I didn't dare ask for it.'

Deborah claimed that the cleanliness of the hospital was not up to standard, and said her opinion of the hospital fell throughout the week. Each ward she was placed on was unhygienic, she claimed.

"The bins weren't emptied and the toilets weren't cleaned," she said. "Dinner pots were sometimes left there for hours without being cleared away."

The 'nasty' outburst from a member of the nursing staff was the final straw for Deborah and she discharged herself on Friday.

"The doctor was not happy that I was discharging myself, but over my dead body will I set foot back in that hospital again," said Deborah.

"I was passed from pillar to post, and the place was filthy. I'm back at home now, waiting for the results of my test."

Deborah has since lodged a complaint with the Trust's Patient Advice and Liaison Service, and has contacted the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) with her concerns.

A spokeswoman from the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust told the Goole Times earlier this week: "When a nursing mother is admitted to our hospital, we always endeavour to place them in the most appropriate place, recognising mother and baby's safety.

"We take these type of concerns raised extremely seriously, and if the lady would like to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service, we will be able to thoroughly investigate her concerns and report back to her our findings."
