End of an era as shop closes its doors
The son of a Goole businesswoman has this week paid tribute to his mother's hard work and success as she prepares to retire after 50 years in business throughout the town.
Elsie Farrar (77) is currently the owner of fireplace specialist Houseproud in Pasture Road but is soon to retire after running the shop for 25 years in partnership with her son, Michael.
Elsie has built up a respectable reputation around the town during her time at Houseproud, but is perhaps better known for her first business venture with Nurseryland, which she bought 50 years ago.
Michael told the Goole Times that his mother has lived in the town all her life - growing up in Marlborough Avenue where he said she "danced for chips at her local chip shop"! . On leaving school, Elsie began her nursery nurse training.
She later moved on to open Nurseryland, which began life in Carlisle Street and sold a selection of clothes for youngsters.
The business and its selection of baby products expanded over time, becoming well known throughout the town. Elsie eventually moved the business to premises in Pasture Road but decided to sell it ten years ago to concentrate on new business Houseproud.
"Elsie sold Nurseryland because it was time to move on," said Michael.
"Most people around Goole will remember Elsie for Nurseryland, as it has provided a service to the town for two generations of people.
"But in recent years, Elsie has been providing another valuable service to the people of Goole with Houseproud.
"She has made her job her life, and people will miss seeing her in business around Goole."
Michael added that yesterday (Wednesday), Elsie returned from a holiday in Jersey and will now be looking forward to spending more time with her family during her retirement.
