Soldier misses out on bravery honour
Captain Ibrar Ali from Yorkshire, who served in Iraq with Private Luke Simpson from Howden, was keen to "point out Luke's brave actions" after it emerged that Captain Ali would receive the Military Cross, Britain's second highest medal.
Pte Simpson, who served with the 1st Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment (1 Yorks), died in February when a string of roadside bombs exploded near his lightly-armoured Land Rover on a road next to the Shatt-al-Arab waterway in Basra. Pte Simpson brought the vehicle to a safe halt, saving the lives of the rest of his comrades. Captain Ali, who had to have his right hand amputated after the blast, was honoured for taking charge of the aftermath.
Despite some claims recently that Luke had been 'overlooked' for a bravery medal, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: "The operational honours process is very fair and thorough and it is one that has been used for a number of years. Of course we recognise that there are lots of courageous people who we would love to honour with an award but we can't give one to everyone."
Commanding officers put forward names of individual soliders and officers who they believe are worthy of medals but the final decision rests with the Ministry of Defence.
Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Jackson, commanding officer of 1 Yorks, said: "We cannot disclose who we nominated for an award as it is a very discreet and thorough process.
"I believe that Luke Simpson, even though he was badly injured himself, ensured the safety of other people who were with him when he brought the vehicle to a safe halt. I think its also fair to point out the actions of Captain Ali because he too was injured and he showed great personal courage and that is all we can ask of a young soldier."
The Yorkshire Regiment returned from Iraq in May after their seven-month tour of duty.
