Saved charity face-lift plea
The Hinge organisation in Goole is making an appeal to local tradespeople and businesses for help with an extreme makeover of their centre.
The Hinge Centre has been running for the last ten years and has recently received vital five years funding from the Big Lottery Fund for its 'Chances for Life' project. Earlier this year the centre, which is in Carlisle Street, was facing the very real prospect of closure.
Martin Crossland, the new project delivery manager, said: "The aim of the 'Chances for Life' project is to support young people to give them a chance in life.
"Whilst we do have funding for the projects now, unfortunately we don't have any for refurbishment. The new 'Forums4Us' young people focus group wants to make an appeal to the local community, local tradespeople and businesses in the hope that they can provide volunteer time, key skills and materials as well as donations in order to achieve their dream of a new modern centre.
"We would like to create a fresh new start for our current clients whilst retaining the historic side to the centre and take various aspects of the work done by the original service users.
"We want to show that we are a professional agency and engage the communities support in this."
Stephen Chamberlain, a 16-year-old service user of the centre, said: "We are looking for joiners, decorators, electricians, art designers, materials such as wood, paint, brushes and rollers and of course time to help us with upgrading the centre.'
He added: "We, the young people and service users, are dependent on the services and workshops provided by staff and we just want to give something back to them for all their hard work, dedication and support. Having faced a number of difficult situations myself, I have always been able to access the services provided by the centre without which I would not be here today."
Stephen and other young people have begun working with the new team at the centre, which will now focus on three specific elements.
The first is the internal upgrade of the centre, which they hope will include a new kitchen and equipment.
The second is an appeal for canned food which forms part of a start-up pack and emergency food parcels for young people who find themselves without a home, money, food or means to support themselves when initially referred to the centre.
They also require cash donations to help cover costs incurred as a result of the makeover. It is hoped that if this appeal is successful they will be able to begin work in the next few weeks and have the work completed within three months, with an official re-launch of the centre in November. The centre will remain open as usual during this time.
All contributors to the appeal will be invited to a buffet lunch prepared by the young people of the centre in order to thank everyone involved.
Inquiries about providing materials, services, canned food items, equipment, volunteer time and donations can be made to Martin Crossland, Strategic Development Manager, The Hinge Centre, Goole on 01405 765435 or email martin@thehinge.biz
