A popular football course has been given a helping hand by the town council.

Last year, Goole Football in the Community's coaching courses proved a big success with children and will run in various formats again this year.

At Monday's town council meeting, organiser Andy Ullathorne asked for financial assistance with the hire of the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

Referring to West Park, Mr Ullathorne said: "It's not suitable for a four or five day course.

"There's no undercover facilities - nowhere for the kids to have their lunch."

Although there are changing rooms in the pavilion, they have to be kept locked for security and too much time is spent going back and forth to unlock them.

Security is another concern. Mr Ullathorne said of the VPG: "It's safe and secure."

Cllr Shirley Marshall visited the course last year and commented: "The children were all so well behaved it was incredible.

"I'd like to support whatever Andy's trying to do."

However, problems have arisen because Football in the Community is a social enterprise limited by guarantee and, after receiving a grant and loan from Business Link Humber, is supposed to be self-sustaining.

Goole Town Council are not allowed to give them a grant and cannot grant them free use of their facilities.

It was agreed that Andy Ullathorne should be charged a reduced fee - the equivalent of two junior football matches per day - for the courses in July and August.

As a social enterprise, Football in the Community is due to receive a grant of £8,000 and a loan of £2,000 from Business Link Humber.

Any money that is made goes back into funding other Football in the Community projects.
