Flood worry over homes site digging
There was more flooding fear amongst residents in Hook at the weekend when contractors began digging ground close to the river bank.
The digging was taking place on a site in High Street, just off Aegre Drive, that has been set aside for a forthcoming housing development from Barratt Homes, but a parish councillor has branded the plans unsuitable for the village.
At the time of going to press, Barratt Homes were unable to officially confirm why contractors were carrying out the work on their behalf at the weekend. But, it is believed that the hole was being made in order to dig out Japanese Knotweed, a destructive plant that does not compete fairly with our native species, and is able to spread unchecked.
Residents became concerned over the close proximity between the newly-dug hole and the river bank, and recovery vehicles were called in when the digger being used for the task became stuck in the hole that was filling with water due to heavy downpours.
Lawrence de Donges, chairman of Hook Parish Council, told the Goole Times: "I was called to the site when villagers became worried about cracks in flood defences as a result of the digging.
"The contractors were trying to get rid of Japanese Knotwood, which is very dangerous, and its roots go deep so a lot of digging had to be done. Specialist equipment was then called in to pull the digger out of the hole when it got stuck.
"Hook Parish Council has twice vehemently opposed plans for a housing development on this site. The drainage systems can't take any more and Hook is getting more and more congested, but we are being constantly overridden by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
"This site will include more Barratt boxes that are not in keeping with this village."
At the time of going to press, East Riding of Yorkshire Council was unavailable for comment.
