A £3.7 million pilot scheme creating joint police crime units covering several force areas has been given the go-ahead.

Humberside Police will join forces with North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire to form a regional undercover unit. The Yorkshire collaboration, which is one of 30 out of 43 forces in England and Wales to test the scheme, will receive cash to fund the unit.

Chief Constable Tim Hollis of Humberside Police said: "The foundations of Humberside Police continue to be delivering neighbourhood policing. We are pleased with the substantial improvements we are achieving at this local level but at the same time we need to tackle the high level threats posed by serious and organised crime. We are playing an equal part with the three forces in our region to explore ways we can increase our capabilities and capacity together in dealing with specialised areas of policing, such as undercover work. We already work in collaboration with the neighbouring forces but the additional funding will help us develop the work we have already begun."

Sir Norman Bettison, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police: "Rather than individual police forces tackling these cross border threats, it does seem to make more sense for police forces to work collaboratively to better protect the public."
