Residents' despair over building work
Residents of Goole's Montrose Drive have this week confessed that they are at their 'wits end' due to the disruption being caused as workmen set about completing a nearby housing development.
The 'Reuben's Reach' housing development from Ben Bailey Homes, situated in Bretton Avenue, has attracted controversy since work began due to claims from residents and local councillors that drainage problems, over-development and extra traffic are three good reasons why the development should not have gone ahead.
And this week, residents in the neighbouring Montrose Drive hit out once again about the multitude of problems being caused as a result of the development.
David and Patricia Gardiner were outraged on Monday after learning that the site of the new housing development had flooded over the weekend due to a heavy downpour, and surface water was being pumped into Montrose Drive.
"We are at our wits end, we just don't know who to contact anymore," said Patricia Gardiner.
"There was a heavy downpour at the weekend and they are pumping the water from the site into the road. The site is built ten inches above the road level in Montrose Avenue so some gardens have been flooded."
The couple claimed that they have contacted East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) about the problems they were experiencing with flooding as a result of the housing development being built on higher ground, but said that nothing has been done in an attempt to resolve the problem.
Nearby neighbour Steve Butterworth complained: "My garage flooded a few weeks ago, and the problems are just never ending. Workmen are starting work earlier than they should, and they are told they can't work on a Saturday afternoon but they do."
And Jenny Walsh of Montrose Avenue claims that she has experienced a multitude of problems since work began on the Bretton Avenue development.
"Recently, workmen laying an electricity cable for the site dug up the paths on Montrose Drive and whilst doing this, they cut through telephone cables and I was without a phone for ten days, and my neighbour suffered almost three weeks," she said.
"No one has admitted liability or apologised for this. Ben Bailey Homes say they are approachable but when you contact them, nothing ever seems to be done."
The Goole Times was this week unable to contact a spokesperson from Ben Bailey Homes over the latest round of complaints, but site manager Dave Linstead previously told this newspaper: "If any of the residents have any queries or complaints, they are quite welcome to come onto the site speak to me or have a look around."
A spokesperson for ERYC told the Goole Times this week: "We have not received any complaints of the development not being built according to the planning consent.
"Anyone who would like to make a complaint to our planning enforcement section can do so by calling 01482 393939."
