Local MPs set to work together to improve area's rail services

Published on 19th July 2007 in News

Two MPs threw their weight behind a campaign to improve local rail links when they met in Snaith at the weekend.

Goole MP Ian Cawsey and MP for Selby, John Grogan, met to discuss how they can work together for a common good to bring extra rail services to the area and as a result, the pair agreed that they will each speak to Network Rail and train companies about what they can do to help make the ongoing bid for improved rail services a reality.

The Goole to Leeds Rail Improvement Action Group, made up of representatives from local town and parish councils, was set up in April and since then, has been endeavouring to improve rail links between Leeds and Goole by hosting a series of meetings with Northern Rail, Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council and the Passenger Services Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Ian Cawsey said he plans to meet with such local campaigners tomorrow (Friday) to discuss what they are doing and how he can help.

"Snaith is a good example of a station that could be used more, which in turn could mean local people do not have to drive to another larger station," said Ian.

In fact, a number have told me they simply don't even consider using the train at the moment because there are not enough local services.

"Passenger numbers on trains are at a fifty-year high which shows that when the investment is made, people do use them. The more convenient the rail authorities can make it, the more these figures will continue to improve. That's what John and I will be encouraging them to do."

John Grogan added: "The last time I was in Snaith to meet Ian, it was about Carlton Bridge and we managed to get a good result that time so I hope we are able to do it again.

"I believe there is a demand locally for more trains and we need to work with the rail authorities to find solutions that will improve services and give local people the chance to take the train."
