Artsmark award for Brooke School

Published on 12th July 2007 in News

Brooke Primary School in Thorne has achieved one of the 1,481 Arts Council England Artsmark Gold Awards, it has been announced.

Artsmark is the national arts award for schools that demonstrates a commitment to developing their arts provision, from drama to music, design to literature and dance to sculpture. The scheme also encourages schools to work in partnership with artists and art organisations.

Sally Kimber, head teacher of Brooke Primary School, said: "I am delighted that the Arts Council has recognised Brooke Primary School's progressive arts education programme which enables pupils to work with local artists.

"There is a huge amount of arts creativity going on at Brooke Primary. For example, the school held an arts week and worked with Mandle Sibanda from the Sundaze Dance Theatre. This stimulated interest in drumming, harmonizing, 3D art and drama through story telling.

"In addition, the school has a thriving choir and orchestra involving over 100 pupils, including a range of instruments. A big thank you to staff for all their hard work in achieving the award!"

Andy Carver, executive director of Arts Council England, said: "Our congratulations go to all the schools who have achieved the Artsmark award. Enhancing opportunities for young people to take part in the arts is central to our work. The arts help young people to reach their full potential, both in their educational achievement and personal development. An Artsmark Award recognises the strong arts provision and commitment to the arts in the successful schools."
