New rules for waste disposal

Published on 12th July 2007 in News

Goole residents will be affected by a new government directive that comes into force this month and dictates how unwanted electrical items must be collected and disposed of.

Under the new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, items such as televisions, fridges and computers are to be separated from other waste.

Smaller items, like hairdryers, toasters and toys, must not go into the green refuse bins. These items can be taken to East Riding of Yorkshire Council's (ERYC) ten household and recycling sites.

A million tonnes of household electrical and electronic waste is thrown away every year across the country, and it is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK and the EU. Some items contain hazardous substances and parts such as mercury in switches, lead in solder, and cadmium in batteries.
