Drink-driver banned
A local man found to be driving whilst more than twice over the legal alcohol limit has been given a hefty fine and disqualified from driving for nearly two years.
Bernard Cartwright (57), of Kilpin Hall, Kilpin, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before Goole Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Mrs Julie Laverack Glanville told the court that police officers followed Mr Cartwright's car from Boothferry Road in Howden on Saturday, June 2, after they saw it veering from side to side as it went along the road.
When police stopped Mr Cartwright on Western Road in Goole, they arrested him after smelling alcohol on his breath. Breath tests showed Mr Cartwright had 81mcg of alcohol in 100mll of breath. The legal limit for a driver is 35mcg.
In his defence, Mr Cartwright told magistrates: "I am really sorry. I really didn't know that I was over the limit.
"I don't normally drink because I provide a 24-hour service [for mental-health help]."
Magistrates disqualified Mr Cartwright from driving for 20 months and ordered that he pay a fine of £200. He was also ordered to pay £55 towards court costs and a statutory victim surcharge of £15.
