Support vital for church re-vamp

Published on 21st June 2007 in News

Organisers of the Flower Festival at Goole Parish Church are urging people to come along this weekend and support their local church.

The festival will take place on Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23 from 10am until 4pm and Sunday 24, 12 noon until 4pm.

The event is to raise funds for toilets for the disabled at the church and for the spire, which is in a bad state or repair and will cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to put right.

The theme for the festival is 'Time and Tide', which will be interpreted into flowers and crafts connected to all things nautical. The church has strong connections with the seafaring community and was purposely built close to the docks.

Flower displays will be staged by Goole and District Flower Club and church members. Embroidery and needlework by Scunthorpe Branch of the Embroiders Guild plus Young Embroiderer's and East Yorkshire Embroiderer's Society (EYES) can also be seen, as well as artwork by Kingsway School pupils and the Arts and Craft groups of the Waterways Museum. Also present will representatives of the Mariners' Association and the Mission to Seafarers.

A great number of people in the local community use the Parish Church for baptisms, weddings and funerals and this is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to show their support for the church and raise some much-needed funds to make sure the church is there for future generations.

The official opening will take place tomorrow, Friday at 11am. Admission is £2.50 for adults, accompanying young children get in for free.
