Affordable housing on the cards with 'Youthbuild' project

Young people from across the region are helping to build a better future for Goole.

Youthbuild is a scheme which provides hands-on training for trainees in the construction industry.

Money from the Humber Housing Partnership has been used to buy and renovate three adjoining derelict properties in Percy Street, Old Goole.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) has joined forces with Youthbuild, who will undertake all renovation and repair necessary to bring the properties up to a high standard suitable for sale on the open market.

Sally Burns, the council's head of housing and public protection, said it was a "win-win" situation.

"The aim of the scheme is to engage unemployed young people and provide a route for them to acquire construction trade and life skills.

"The scheme provides the trainees with the practical work experience that they need and boosts their understanding of the building trade, as well as developing the skills that they will need in the future.

"It's a win-win situation as it is a way of supporting the development of trainees in the local area and at the same time bringing affordable properties in need of improvement up to standard and back on the market."

When the properties are finished, they will be sold at open market to first-time buyers with a connection to Goole.

It is expected that the properties will be completed in early July and the ERYC is preparing to market them for sale in the near future.
