LATVIAN Romeo Girts Policans has be been jailed for nine months after persuading Goole police to lock up his love rival for 24 hours while he tried to win back the heart of his ex-girlfriend.

However, his ill-thought-out plan backfired when Aista Judelunene did not want him back and spurned his advances in favour of her new boyfriend.

Police grew suspicious of Mr Polican's story and after bailing Kestutis Janusevicius they spoke to Mr Policans again. He admitted he had over-egged the story of being threatened at point-blank with a gun.

However, he had wasted police time on a pointless inquiry and deprived his fellow countryman of 24 hours of freedom.

Justice finally caught up with Mr Policans (pictured), of Pasture Road in Goole, when he appeared at Hull Crown Court for sentence after pleading guilty to committing an act intended to pervert the course of justice.

Judge Robert Moore said the offence was so serious only a nine-month prison sentence could be justified.

Crown barrister David Cammies said Mr Policans had gone to the police claiming Kestutis Janusevicius had pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him.

Mr Cammies said Mr Policans had been in a relationship with Aista Judelunene, but it had ended and she was seeing Mr Janusevicius. Jealous of the new boyfriend, Mr Policans went to the police claiming he had been threatened.

"As a result Kestutis Janusevicius was locked up for 24 hours," said Mr Cammies. "The defendant wanted to rekindle the relationship with his ex-girlfriend. As it happened, police found a gun in the back garden of a house in Goole. But no one has ever been charged with that." The police could not prove who it belonged to.

Defence solicitor Richard Thompson told the hearing that Mr Policans maintained his guilty plea and admitted he had lied. He said the complaint was true in part.

Mr Thompson said: "The complainant did have a gun and he did threaten him, but he did not point the gun at him."
