'No politics'

'Leave politics out of it' was the message at this week's Goole Town Council meeting.

The call came as councillors discussed whether to alter the way that the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the two committees (planning and policy and resources) are chosen.

At the moment, councillors are nominated and voted in by fellow members.

However, at the annual general meeting last month, the Liberal Democrats suggested that the positions be shared out on a rotating basis.

At Monday's meeting, councillors asked clerk Brian Robertson to draw up a proposal which would fit in with the current standing orders to this effect.

They were also in favour of a mayor's meeting before the AGM, to ensure the AGM itself goes smoothly.

"I don't see any problem with the rotation," said Cllr Jean Kitchen.

"We can't be exact but we can be fairer."

Independent councillor Shirley Marshall added: "At this level, there shouldn't be any politics at all.

"We should be putting all our efforts into making Goole Town Council something to be proud of."
