Exceptional head at primary where 'every child' matters
Exceptional teaching and a commitment to making every child matter has helped Thorne Brooke Primary School to a glowing Ofsted report.
The school, on Wike Gate Road, has been graded good overall, with some outstanding features, after an inspection last month.
Personal development and care were the strongest elements of the report and inspector Rosemary Eaton commented on the maturity of the pupils as they carry out their roles as playground leaders and members of the school council.
"Pupils thoroughly enjoy coming to school," she reported.
"They are enthusiastic learners, very keen to acquire new skills such as learning to play a brass instrument."
Parents are said to have confidence in their children's teachers and pupils told the inspector that the staff are "really kind and look after us".
In the classroom, Ms Eaton noted "Teachers make managing pupils' behaviour seem effortless.
"High expectations, reminders when needed and plenty of praise and encouragement help to create classrooms in which all pupils can learn while having fun in the process."
The leadership of head teacher Sally Kimber was said to have outstanding features, such as the checks she has put in place to monitor how well the school is performing.
Equally, the senior staff play an important part in helping the school improve.
In the Achievements and Standards category, the school was graded good and the pupils' progress in the Foundation Stage described as outstanding.
Ms Eaton identified writing as the weakest area of pupils' work across the school, and commented that they make slower progress in this than in reading, mathematics and science.
To improve the school further, it was recommended that measures be put in place to raise standards and improve achievement in writing, and to involve all subject leaders in analysing assessments of pupils' learning.
Overall, Thorne Brooke was graded two, which equates to good out of possible gradings of poor, fair, good and outstanding.
Speaking to the Goole Times about the inspection, head teacher Mrs Kimber said she and everyone else was 'thrilled' with the report and attributed it to the hard work of all involved.
"We've always thought of our school as a good school and it's wonderful to get external recognition," she said.
"They said: 'Every child in your school matters' - and that's what we stand for."
