Compost group formed

A working group has been set up in Snaith with a view to seeing a community composting scheme implemented in and around the town.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council's (ERYC) composting officer Steve Hall joined town councillors and members of the public in the Old Grammar School on Monday last week to discuss the benefits of ERYC's community composting schemes.

ERYC is currently offering funding for new groups to start up community composting schemes, and will pay up to £75 per tonne of green waste composted.

Cath Kibbler, from the Sheffield-based Community Composting Network, was also present at the meeting to discuss what a community composting scheme would mean for the town, and a working group of five people has now been set up to work out how the scheme could best work in the town.

Speaking to this newspaper following the meeting, Cath declined to reveal which sites had been identified as a potential base for the scheme, but added: "I was really pleased that so many people turned out for the meeting. It was really encouraging to see.

"A lot of people have returned the slips of paper that were sent out to them, so that they can be kept informed or become part of composting clubs in the future, but it is still not too late to send slips back to us."
