Train tragedy averted as blaze burns out

A disaster in Crowle was avoided yesterday morning when a fire in a train burned itself out.
The driver of a locomotive called the fire brigade shortly after 2am after noticing flames and smoke coming from the roof of the train.
The locomotive had stopped at Medge Hall Crossing, Crowle Common, and the fire crews had to carry their equipment a considerable distance from the nearest road.
When they arrived, they found the fire had gone out when the engine was shut down.
The fire was caused by a leaking water cooler which had overheated and ignited.
Having ensure the fire was out, firefighters left the incident in the hands of railway staff, who arranged for another locomotive to come to the scene.
