Sales at a local furniture makers Howden Joinery have increased by 9.8 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Galiform, who sold their MFI retail business last year, said that sales were up as new stores were being opened and more custom-made kitchens were sold.

Sales are up 5.9 per cent on a same-depot basis and the gross margin was the similar to that seen in 2006.

Nine Howden Joinery depots have been opened so far this year, and there are plans for 60 more.
