Work on hold

Gas works planned for Boothferry Road in Goole have been postponed while engineers take stock of the best way to minimise traffic disruption.

Northern Gas Networks needs to replace about 500 metres of old metal gas main with new plastic pipe, which is safer and more reliable.

Originally expected to start in May, the project is now awaiting the outcome of discussions with rail and highways officials.

Polly Rourke, of United Utilities, the company in charge of the work said: "This is essential work for the continued safety of local gas supplies but we realise it is likely to cause disruption and we want to do everything in our power to keep it to a minimum. We have no definite date for starting work yet.

"The only people who will be affected are those whose gas pipe needs transferring to the new main. They may be without gas for a few hours at the most and should be re-connected the same day.

"Our engineers will contact them in advance when the project starts."
