New proposals on traffic chaos issues

Published on 17th May 2007 in News

Snaith town councillors are this week pushing forward with their bid to see road improvements implemented in the town centre to prevent road accidents in the future.

At last month's meeting, councillors suggested that either bollards are put in place outside the town lock-up in Buttermarket or a one-way system is implemented in the area, in response to an accident in November last year, in which a car ploughed into the town lock-up and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

But at a meeting on Monday, councillors heard that the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) would not provide any financial help if bollards were to be put in place, and instead discussed the possibility of changing the direction of traffic flow in the town.

A north-bound one-way system from Market Place to Mill Street was suggested, but ERYC's traffic and parking department blasted the proposal, claiming it would be impossible for motorists trying to access Mill Street from the back of Snaith Priory Church.

Cllr Geoff Thornton instead persuaded councillors to consider the implementation of a no-left-turn restriction at Mill Street's junction with Buttermarket, preventing a similar smash occurring again at the town lock-up in Buttermarket.

Proposals are now set to be put forward to ERYC.
