Tory delight

Published on 10th May 2007 in News

Goole's prospective Conservative MP Andrew Percy has spoken out over his delight at the 'fantastic' results of last week's local elections which saw a victory for the Tories in the Brigg and Goole constituency.

The constituency, which straddles two different local authorities, recorded 7874 votes for the Conservatives to just 6655 for Labour and stormed to victory in the East Riding Ward of Snaith, Airmyn, Rawcliffe and the Marshlands, removing the two sitting Labour councillors.

Andrew Percy said that last week's figures show that if there had been a General Election on the same day, the Conservatives would have seen a great success in the Brigg and Goole constituency.

"These are fantastic results and would have been better if figures for the Tory stronghold of Brigg and Wolds were included," said Mr Percy.

"Those figures will be delayed until the by-election scheduled for June, caused by the sad death of an election candidate.

"These results show that local people want a change in Brigg and Goole.

"Although I am disappointed by the loss of North Lincolnshire Council, the results across the constituency clearly show that local people want a new Government and an end to Labour's national and local spin. I personally spent a great deal of time campaigning in the Snaith ward and was struck by how many people told me they had voted Labour all their lives but never again.

"The results show that the fight for Brigg and Goole will be a clear two-horse race between Labour and the Conservatives."

Sir,

I stood as a candidate for the East Ward of Goole Town Council. This ward is massive, stretching from the Hook Railway Bridge to Carlisle Street and I'd like to thank all those people who voted for me. It was my first election and I discovered one issue during the campaign which was of great concern. In the other Goole wards, most candidates were living in the wards they were standing in, but in Goole East six of the nine candidates live outside the ward including both Labour, both Liberal Democrats and two Independents. Since the election I have spoken to many people in Goole East who didn't know this and have said they would have voted differently if they had. Why didn't these six people stand in their own wards? I thought that the whole point of Goole Town Council was that communities elected local people to represent their interests. How can someone living on the other side of town properly represent the people of Goole East? I for one will be watching very closely.

Sir,

I would like to thank all the people who voted for me as a Councillor for the West Ward of Goole, for giving me your trust, and I promise that I will always put Goole and the people first and foremost for the next 4 years, as I have done for the past 8 years. I would also, at the same time, like to thank all the people who have wished me well over the past 6 months, I never realised just how many people knew me, and believe me your wishes certainly helped me in my recovery to date.

Thank you all very much.

Sir.

After a successful local election campaign, I would like to take this opportunity to thank publicly voters and supporters enabling me to serve the next four years on Goole Town Council.

It was most gratifying to witness good performances by other independent candidates in both Town and County elections. When you consider that independents do not have the support of organised Party machinery, I think voters are beginning to appreciate the extra effort necessary to run a successful campaign. It also demonstrates the growing disenchantment with Party Politics in local affairs together with their irrelevance.

In the East Riding, the voters have elected a Conservative council with an overall majority, so there will be no need to form any unholy alliance with any minority Party.Lets hope this time the Lib Dem, Labour and independent councillors coordinate an effective opposition and put their past bitter rivalries to one side.

We certainly do not want a repeat situation from the past four years when the Lib Dems were just as ineffective in opposition as they were in coalition, Labour got into bed with the Conservatives, both factors contributing towards the damning verdict given by the voters on May 3rd.

Sir,

Howdenshire Election May 3, 2007

Although I was unsuccessful in the above election, I would, nevertheless, like to thank those loyal people who did vote for me and I am deeply grateful for the support you gave. My future hopes for you, the people of Howdenshire, is that the newly elected councillors, realise the great responsibility that now rests on their shoulders, and that your quality of life and wellbeing is protected and comes before any egotistical or personal ambitions they may have. If you ever consider that I can be of help or assistance in any way, I will always be pleased to hear from you because I will still be around. Watch this space.

Sir,

Following the recent Local Council Elections we wish to offer a sincere thank you to the local people in the Snaith, Airmyn, Rawcliffe and Marshland Ward who have recently elected us to be the Local Councillors who will represent them on East Riding Council.

We would also wish to pay tribute to Andrew Percy for his unstinting support and energy during the recent campaign.

Our best wishes for the future also go to the other candidates who all ran honourable campaigns during the elections and in particular Christie Arnold, who although disappointed was magnanimous in defeat.

Now elected it is our intention to work tirelessly to resolve those issues which are important in this ward.

Councillors Caroline A Fox and George Megson.
