More funds needed to finish church repairs
Published on 10th May 2007 in News
Major work to turn Gilberdyke Methodist Church into a valuable community facility has got underway this week.
Four years ago, the future of the church was evaluated after a large hole was discovered in the floor of the former Sunday School building.
Members of the church consulted the Goole Methodist Circuit, local organisations and the community and finally decided that an all-out effort would be made to save the church.
Plans were drawn up not only to modernise the building but also to allow it to be used by other organisations, such as a luncheon club for the elderly, a craft club and a young persons' activity group.
A spokesperson for the fundraisers said: "This £200,000 project has been made possible with the generous help of the Goole Methodist Circuit and several other organisations including WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd) and Garfield Weston, together with tremendous support from the community of Gilberdyke.
"Although work began on Tuesday, we are unable to complete the entire project due to lack of funds and are continuing with our fundraising efforts.
"We feel confident that with everyone's continued support we shall achieve our targets."
Fervent fundraisers: Barbara Morris, Martin Acrid and Audrey Else, who are all members of the the chapel. (10-05-37 GT)
