MP shocked by school violence statistics

Published on 10th May 2007 in News

David Davis has hit out at disturbing statistics concerning a massive rise in violence in the regions schools.

Mr Davis said: "Violence in the regions classrooms is clearly worsening. It is utterly unacceptable. Teachers and pupils should have the right to teach and learn without having to face the fear of violence."

Figures given by the Yorkshire and Humber Government office showed that of the 578 permanent exclusions in Yorkshire and Humber secondary schools for 2003/04, 7.7 per cent were due to physical assaults against pupils and staff. In 2004/05 this figure had risen to a disturbing 12.8 per cent, showing that the problem of violence in schools is clearly escalating.

Mr Davis added: "Tackling bad behaviour in schools should have been a major priority of this government.

"The Conservative Party supported the new powers in last year's Education Act for teachers to discipline pupils, and the powers for pupils to be searched if necessary."
