Council object to use of land

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council claims that there has been a breach of planning control at a site in Aughton after a commercial dog training and therapy business was allegedly set up without planning permission.

The council believes that without planning permission, land west of Firkin Mouth Drain in Long Lane, Aughton is being used for the siting of a residential caravan, a commercial dog training and therapy business and the siting of a portaloo when the land is only permitted for agricultural use.

The dog training business is said to encroach onto an area of open countryside and appears visually intrusive, harming the character of the area.

An appeal got underway on February 22, following the issue of an Enforcement Notice in respect of the land. The appeal is to be decided on the basis of an exchange of written statements by the parties and to be discussed at an informal hearing.

The appellants, Mr and and Mrs Olley, have argued that the business has been up and running for seven years and they provide a "valuable and necessary" service to dog owners. They claimed that if an enforcement notice against the site goes ahead, the couple's business will be destroyed and both will be left unemployed and homeless.
