Welcoming their new ‘classmates’ are Sophie Walton (back) and Emma Stowe (front), with Peter Phillips of CE Electric.

Two new pupils and a headmaster have joined St Joseph's Catholic Primary School - and everyone is thrilled to know they will be permanent fixtures.

The school has been presented with a wooden sculpture of two children and Peter Netherwood, the former headteacher, by electricity distributors CE Electric UK.

St Joseph's were one of several schools picked to receive a power sculpture as part of a project to recycle waste wood from its vegetation management programme.

Chainsaw sculptor Simon O'Rourke carved the sculpture to the school's specifications, and included carvings around the base to show their sports and activities.

The sculpture itself is of two children holding the school flag and Mr Netherwood.

The recently retired headteacher had no idea he was going to be carved, and the children had to keep the huge secret for two months.

Class Two teacher Julie Morrell said everyone at the school was thrilled with the finished sculpture.

"The pupils have been working hard with Simon and are very excited now the sculpture is in position," she said.

"We'd like to thank Simon for his hard work in producing the sculpture and for CE Electric UK for opening up such a fantastic competition to our school."

Peter Phillips, vegetation management manager at CE Electric UK presented the sculpture and said: "This is a great way of recycling timber that might otherwise go to waste whilst providing local schools with a permanent piece of art that is special to them."
