Badly hurt as car overturns

A 24-year-old man from Newport had to be cut out of his car and airlifted to hospital after the car he was driving overturned on a road out of Howden on Sunday evening.
Martin James suffered serious head injuries when his blue Ford Mondeo overturned on the B1230 a mile outside of Howden, by Pear Tree Farm.
Police, paramedics and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service and firefighters from Howden, Goole and Scunthorpe all attended the scene shortly after 5.15pm.
Firefighters used specialist rescue equipment to free Mr James before he was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary by the air ambulance.
Glenn Ramsden, spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue, said: "This really was a race against time for the emergency crews.
"The man has been taken to hospital by air ambulance with multiple injuries which could prove to be life-threatening.
"The emergency services find themselves dealing with an ever-increasing number of extrications from vehicle collisions.
"It is extremely important that drivers stay very alert and drive according to the road conditions - better that than the alternative."
As we went to press a hospital spokesperson said that Mr James was in a stable condition.
