Removal call for trashed telephone box

A disgrace - the windows of the phone box on St Lawrence Avenue have been smashed again, leaving glass strewn over the footpath.

A Snaith resident is asking whether one of the phone boxes should be removed from the town after it was vandalised for the fifth time in five years.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said he noticed the damage on Sunday morning while walking his dog.

Vandals have thrown lumps of stone through the phone box, leaving shattered glass all over the pavement.

It had caused such a mess that the resident had to pick up the dog and carry him so that the animal did not get glass in his paws.

The resident said: "I have been a Snaith resident for five years and this must be the fifth time this has happened.

"I don't know if these incidents have been reported to the police or BT but if it was me I would remove the phone box altogether."

However, BT have said they have no plans to take it away.

A spokesperson said: "This box has had two faults in the past six months and five in the past five years.

"Although this is not acceptable it is far from being considered a problem box.

"If damage to a payphone becomes very frequent we automatically install polycarbonate or remove the door to prevent it happening again.

"However, at present this does not warrant these measures.

"We will continue to monitor the fault reports on this box and take the necessary action, should it continue.

"The damage should be repaired by the end of the week.

"At this point we have no plans to remove the box as it is still being used by the community. "
