Police warn against being an easy target for bogus callers

Published on 3rd May 2007 in News

Police have warned residents to ask for identification when a sales person calls at their door.

They have pointed out that whilst the majority of callers to homes are genuine, there may be occasions when the callers are bogus.

In the past bogus callers have been operating in East Yorkshire and people have fallen victim to them.

Officers would like to offer the following advice to help residents avoid becoming a victim of crime.

l A genuine caller will have identification which should have contact details of their employer so checks can be made to ensure their validity.

l Do not invite the sales person into your home unless you are certain they are genuine and you feel comfortable about them being in your house.

l If the sales person is offering some form of service for example gardening, get quotes from other companies to compare and also ask family and friends for recommendations.

l Chains on a door can be a good device as the person calling will not be able to gain access to the house easily or see inside the property.

l Never hand out personal or bank details to individuals who call.

Anyone who has concerns over callers to their home or sees anyone acting suspiciously are asked to contact police on 0845 60 60 222.
