Clare Hunt, operations manager, and Bob Watson, director at the Waterways Museum, get acquainted with Neil Forrest, regional director, Peter Westgarth, chief executive and Sue Emerson, regional operations officer with the Duke of Edinburgh award.

There was a major development at the Waterways Museum in Goole earlier this week when it became home to a brand new regional office of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The new office, which opened on Tuesday (May 1), will be representing the new Yorkshire and Humberside Region of the Award.

The well-established Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a registered charity that encourages young people aged 14-25 to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time.

The local authorities that make up the new region had previously been located within the North East region of the Award. The new region has been established to enable the charity to continue to support its Award groups and their volunteers to its maximum capacity, in an area which has seen strong growth in Award participation during the past few years.

"I am thrilled to be heading up the Award in this new region," said Neil Forrest, Award Director for the Yorkshire and Humberside region.

"Our presence in Goole is a fantastic opportunity for the Award to continue to grow within the Yorkshire and Humberside region and allow us to support our Operating Authorities more closely.

"The Award team and I are delighted to be working in such a fantastic location, and look forward to building on the success of the North East region in enabling more young people to benefit from participation in the Award."

Young people who take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award choose their own programme of challenging, exciting and adventurous activities, which can help instill citizenship qualities and enable participants to gain valuable skills and attributes, whilst having fun.

Clare Hunt, operations manager at the Waterways Museum, told the Goole Times: "The Museum is very happy to be working closely with the Duke of Edinburgh award and is happy to be able to accommodate the regional team in our present office.

"We look forward to working well in partnership."
