Watch out Big Brother - here comes... Chicken-Cam!

Published on 26th April 2007 in News

Fans of Big Brother might be interested to know that a Gilberdyke man has set up a new webcam - to capture the lives of five hens.

Four months ago, Simon Gregson bought five hens and has recently set up a camera to capture Goldie, Ginger, Snowflake, Eggsmerelda and Henrietta Fussyfeathers as they eat, drink and sleep. They can even be seen laying eggs.

"We wanted a pet that was more unusual that cats and dogs," he said.

"Then people at work were asking: 'How are your chickens?' and the idea came to me that they might also want to see them.

"People say watching them is quite relaxing, actually."

An infra-red camera inside the hen hut also allows people to watch the hens in the dark although Simon says they ignore the camera completely.

The hens lay eggs daily and Simon said: "It's a great thing for children to understand where eggs come from."

"The website was voted in the top ten webcam sites within only a week of launching."

As well as www.henhome.com Simon has also set up www.applecam.co.co.uk which will follow apple blossom as it grows into fruit.

"At the start of the year, I came across www.cheddarvision.tv which features a chunk of cheddar maturing," he explained.

"I had the idea that some people might find it interesting just to watch an apple growing - it doesn't get any more exiting than that!

"Some people might see it as the most boring website in the world, or just slightly interesting.

"I see it as a great accompaniment to www.henhome.com"
