Taking a walk on the wild side...

Climbing Ben Nevis in ‘extreme weather conditions’ - Gordon is third from right.

A super-fit father from Rawcliffe is preparing for his tallest challenge yet and is hoping to top £15,000 for a charity which has given valuable support to his autistic son.

Two years ago, Gordon Stowell climbed Ben Nevis in extreme weather conditions and in 2006 he completed the Brecon Beacons challenge, which means scaling four 3,000-foot peaks in a single day.

Just a few weeks ago he completed his hottest challenge - fire-walking at Hillsborough - and now he is planning Trek Kilimanjaro, to be attempted in February, 2008.

Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, is the world's tallest freestanding mountain at 19,341 feet.

"This will be the hardest challenge I have ever faced, both mentally and physically," said Gordon.

"I've done a lot of climbs but this will be the highest I've ever done.

"The altitude will be a problem - you go from sea level straight up.

"I turned 40 this year and I've got to get very fit.

"It will be very, very hard."

Like the previous three challenges, Gordon will be raising money for the National Autistic Society.

"My son Harry was diagnosed with autism just over four years ago," he said.

"Since then, Harry and our family have had to overcome many difficulties and climb many 'mountains'.

"During this time, we have had support from family and friends but also from several organisations. The National Autistic Society has been one of those who have given us valuable advice and support."

Since he started fundraising three years ago, Gordon has raised more than £12,00 and has set a target of £3,000 from his next challenge.

Several local businesses have already agreed to support him and Gordon is appealing to anyone else who feels they can help, either with sponsorship, a product donation for a charity auction or by putting up a poster. His employers, Dixon's Stores Group, have already offered a donation of £500.

"Any size of donation or support, big or small, will be greatly appreciated," he said.

"In return, I will promote your business or organisation at every opportunity including displaying your company logo on all letters and posters I use."
