Determined and “possibly mad”: from left are Paul Lumley, Aus Wilkinson, Peter Cooper, Alan Burton, Tad Adams, Dave Smith and Carl Nicklas.

A group of seven friends are getting ready to face saddle soreness, weary legs and other challenges as they cycle from one end of Britain to the other in an attempt to raise £15,000 for charity.

Between them, Paul Lumley, Aus Wilkindon, Peter Cooper, Alan Burton, Tad Adams, Carl Nicklas and back-up driver Dave Smith have 120 years of service at the MFI factory in Howden.

In June, their friendship and fitness will be put to the test as they bike from John O'Groats to Land's End in aid of two children's hospices.

The group said: "As you are probably aware, this challenge is by no means an easy one.

"None of the team are seasoned cyclists, though we can all remember riding a bike at one time or another.

"Anyway, how hard can it be?

"John O'Groats to Land's End is about as far as you can go in a straight line in the UK without ending up in the sea and most people take between 14 and 17 days to complete the distance.

"Because we are all limited by holiday entitlements, and possibly mad, we we will be attempting to complete the route in less."

The group are hoping to raise more than £15,000 for St Andrew's Hospice and Martin House, which provide palliative care for children with terminal and life-limiting illnesses.

They are being supported by Howden Kitchens, formerly MFI, and any other assistance with the ride would be much appreciated.
