Theatre trip
Published on 12th April 2007 in News
The Marshland Local History Group has proposed an exciting programme of events for the coming year.
Coming up shortly is an evening visit to the Theatre Royal in York on Tuesday, April 17, to see African Snow, written by award winning playwright Murray Watts, which is to be staged to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Britain.
The History Group is always pleased to welcome new members, and non-members are invited to attend events for a small fee.
A number of tickets are still available for the forthcoming theatre visit and cost £18 each, which includes the cost of the coach. Anyone who is interested in joining the History Group on this trip, should contact Joan Drayton on 01405 704512 as soon as possible.
50s remembered
A new exhibition beginning today (Thursday) at Goole Museum looks at how the town was affected when folks 'never had it so good.'
According to Harold Macmillan, British people in the 1950s 'never had it so good': unemployment was neglible, standards of living were rising, medical treatment was free at the point of delivery and the advent of National Insurance had removed the shadow of the workhouse for the old and the poor.
However, the decade was not without its problems - not least a series of 'small wars', culminating in the disaster of Suez - and social upheavals such as the sudden development of teenage culture.
And for some, of course, life continued much as it had done before the war, anyway.
The exhibition looks at how the influences at work in the 1950s affected the social and cultural life of Goole - in entertainment, work, housing, costume, lifestyle and other areas.
It will take place at Goole Museum, on Carlisle Street, which is open Monday 2pm - 5pm, Tuesday - Friday 10am-5pm (closed 12-12.30 for lunch) and Saturday 9am - 1pm. Admission is free.
A lift is available.
