Looking back on past year

Published on 5th April 2007 in News

Local organisations joined Snaith's Town Mayor last week appraisals of the past year at Snaith and Cowick's annual parish meeting.

Representatives from local groups including Snaith and Cowick Together, Snaith Neighbourhood Watch and Snaith Playing Field Association were at the meeting on Thursday, along with members of the public. Each organisation offered its own review of the last year.

Cllr Greta Laughton kicked off proceedings with a report detailing her year as Town Mayor, praising the completion of the re-vamped Joint Use Play Area and the installation of two long-awaited bottle banks in the town. She also revealed that the town council was hoping to sign a lease to rent premises in the town centre for council use in the near future.

"The replacement equipment at the Joint Use Play Area has now been installed and certainly looks good," said Cllr Laughton.

"I look forward to performing the official opening, which is due to take place on May 12. We hope to have all our generous friends and funders with us on that occasion."

She added: "Many issues relating to traffic and parking have been brought to the council. The ever increasing use of cars by us all is bound to create problems for a town like Snaith, which was not built to accommodate such a vast amount of road traffic.

"The 7.5-tonne weight limit in Selby Road has certainly brought a big improvement in that area; unfortunately, some heavy goods vehicles do continue to flout the law.

"With the help of police, the highways authority and the CCTV, we continue to try to deal with these offenders."

Cowick views would be welcomed

Cllr Laughton said that the Town Council had been pleased to be able to welcome West Cowick resident Graham Hulme as a town councillor last year, and hoped, as he was currently the only representative from either West or East Cowick, that other residents from the Cowick area would stand at the forthcoming election and put forward the views of their communities.

In a report given on behalf of Snaith and Cowick Together regeneration partnership, spokesperson Frank Townshend told the meeting that a number of groups set up in the last year, including the Bowling Group and the Snaith and Cowick Drama Group, had flourished. Although last year's Heritage Day was rather 'muted,' Heritage Day 2007 was being planned for Saturday, September 22 to coincide with the Friends of the Priory Church Craft Fair.

Meanwhile, Pc Janet Anderson from Humberside Police added that crime in Snaith and Cowick had not significantly increased during the last year, and that there had continued to be a high-visibility police presence in the area. She urged residents to continue to report any suspicious activities to police.
