Stone statues vanish into foggy night

Published on 5th April 2007 in News

A Goole couple were left baffled by a bizarre theft last week after two large concrete lions were stolen from outside their home.

Rawcliffe Road resident Kathleen Turner told the Goole Times that she was woken shortly before midnight last Wednesday (March 28), when she heard a loud noise that 'moved' the house.

She looked out of the window but could not see clearly because of the thick fog, so thought nothing more of the strange noise until her husband came home and told her one of the two concrete, ornamental lions on their driveway had been knocked over.

When the couple's son left for work at 5am on Thursday, he saw that both the ornaments, which were worth around £180 each, had been stolen.

"It must have taken nearly four men to move the lions, because we had to use a crane to put the lions above our front gateway," said Mrs Miller.

"There were tyre marks on the driveway, so the lions may have been tipped onto the back of a vehicle."

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "The lions are reported to be very heavy and would possibly have needed some sort of transportation to remove them."

If anyone saw or heard anything suspicious relating to last week's theft, or has any information on the whereabouts of the ornaments, please contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
