Local Methodist circuit welcomes new recruit

Published on 29th March 2007 in News

Some exciting changes could soon be seen in churches around Goole after a new mission worker last week joined the Goole Methodist Circuit.

South-African born Liesl Assur was previously based in Maidenhead, working with the Thames Valley Methodist Circuit and reaching out to the 'missing generation' of 20 to 40-year-olds, but last week took up a new role as Mission Enabler with the Goole Methodist Circuit.

As part of her role, Liesl will be working with the Methodist Church staff team, which is led by Rev Nigel Waterfield and includes community development outreach worker Michael Pullan and community worker Kath Lund, both of whom have been working with the team since September 2005, visiting and encouraging links between the churches and the community.

The Goole Methodist Church staff team serves nine churches across Goole, including the Marshland villages and the communities north of the river, from Barmby on the Marsh to Gilberdyke.

Liesl told the Goole Times this week: "My role is to help the churches in the Goole Methodist Circuit to realise their vision in serving God, as well as engaging with the community and strengthening links with local churches.

"At the moment, I am familiarising myself with all the different churches within the circuit, and I am in discussions with them as to where they are going and how I can help with the process. A lot of the local churches are very active in their missions, so that is already half of the job done."

One of Liesl's first projects will include an involvement in the forthcoming Alpha course at The Courtyard in Goole. The course begins on Wednesday, April 25 at 7pm, and acts as a practical and contemporary introduction to the Christian faith.

A welcome service will be held for Liesl at Central Methodist Church in North Street next Tuesday, April 3, beginning at 7.30pm. The preacher at the service will be Rev Stephen Burgess, chair of the York and Hull Methodist District, and all are welcome to attend.
