Slow process to damp down machinery fire

Three fire crews were called to deal with an early morning blaze in Howden last Thursday after machinery at Contract Fertilisers and Storage on Bubwith Road caught fire.
The alarm was raised shortly before 7am last Thursday, when a fire in an elevator conveyor system spread to a hopper containing around 80 tonnes of cocoa shell and cement, a shrink wrapper machine, a weighing platform and a bulk container.
Firefighters from Goole and Howden used a hose reel, two main jets, hay drags, breathing apparatus, ladders and a thermal image camera to deal with the fire.
Glenn Ramsden, spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue, said: "There was a deep seated fire inside the hopper.
"The only way to deal with it was to systematically unload the hopper and damp the hopper down bit by bit.
"The crews were engaged for some considerable time at the incident."
