Community spirit alive and well

Published on 29th March 2007 in News

Thirty students at Howden School were awarded earlier this week for their outstanding efforts as part of last summer's Lifestyle project.

The teams from Howden School that were involved in Humberside Police's annual scheme - which challenges young people aged between 10 and 18 to team up with their friends and decide upon a project to benefit their local community - came up with a number of wonderful ideas to improve their community and perk up the long six-weeks off school. These included sponsored walks, car washing, pony rides, litter picking and raffles.

"It is fantastic that so many young people have got involved in community related projects," said Andrew Williams, headteacher at Howden School.

"There is often too much negative press about young people, so it is great to see today's youth involved in worthwhile projects that make such a difference to people lives. We are very proud of the student's contribution, and would like to say a big thank you to Humberside Police."

As a thank you to students for their efforts, Humberside Police awarded 18 prizes to the best of a great bunch of teams from Howden School. Five gift vouchers were awarded, eight day trips to Flamingo Land and three days out to Alton Towers, as well as an adventure holiday in Wales which was given to two pupils who went to town with their project.
