Howden MP David Davis has paid tribute to William Wilberforce in the week that the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the UK slave trade is marked.
The MP joined other East Yorkshire MPs in paying tribute to the man from Hull, who was responsible for the abolition of the slave trade.
The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act became law on March 25, 1807 and on Saturday, March 24, thousands of people joined the Archbishops of Canterbury and York for a 'walk of witness' in London to mark the anniversary.
"William Wilberforce was the single most important character in stopping a trade that subjected millions to abject misery," said Mr Davis.
"This action means he is arguably the greatest parliamentarian ever to hold office in this country. That he did so without even holding government office is a tribute to the moral courage and sheer single-mindedness of this brilliant man."
