OAP 'lucky to escape' from chip-pan blaze

Published on 29th March 2007 in News

An elderly woman needed oxygen after a chip pan was left unattended at a property on Axholme Street in Goole.

The fire began around 5pm on Friday and was extinguished by the woman using a damp tea towel.

However, the woman was affected by the smoke and was given oxygen by firefighters until an ambulance arrived.

The fire crew cleared the smoke with a ventilation fan.

Glenn Ramsden, spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue, warned of the dangers of cooking fires, including the smoke they create.

"This lady has been very lucky to escape with her life," she said.

"The smoke is the killer and it is unforgiving - it will search you out and find you.

"It is so important that people do not turn their back on cooking. Stay in the kitchen, otherwise you may get distracted, which could lead to disaster."
