RESPECT YOUR LIFE - NOT A KNIFE: Tom Nicholls, Scott Barkham, Tony Nicholls and Johnny Wheatley sign the Damilola pledge wall this week.

Young people from Goole taking part in East Riding of Yorkshire Council's (ERYC) Youth Inclusion Project have been working hard to highlight the dangers of carrying knives by taking part in a number of positive activities at Old Goole Youth Centre.

A group of ten 11- to 16-year-olds from the local area have spent the last five weeks working on an anti-weapon wall in the Old Goole Youth Centre in Percy Street, which is a tribute to Damilola Taylor, the schoolboy who bled to death in 2000 after being stabbed in the leg in Peckham, South London. All who disagree with knife violence have creatively signed their name on the wall.

But the positive message doesn't stop there. The young people involved in the Youth Inclusion Project are linking the anti-weapon wall with a short movie filmed on location in Goole, which highlights all the negative aspects of knife crime before ending on a positive note that promotes anti-violence.

Something to be proud of

Ashley Grimshaw, Youth Inclusion Project intervention co-ordinator at ERYC, told the Goole Times this week: "The Youth Inclusion Project encourages young people to engage in positive activities. All the staff at YIP are very proud of the work and commitment shown to the Damilola pledge wall against knife violence.

"Well done to all who have signed it!"

Once the short film is finished, it will be submitted to the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, where the youngsters are set to host a premiere on May 2.
