Thirteen beauty salons in the Goole, Howden and Snaith area were this week among 98 in the region to achieve a national health and safety award, following spot checks by East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) inspectors.
The award, based on set criteria such as cleanliness and best practice methods to prevent occupational ill-health in employees, has been running for the past six years across the United Kingdom and aims to improve and maintain standards in the hair and beauty sectors.
It was developed when the ERYC public protection division teamed up with HABIA (the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority) with support from the National Hairdressing Federation and the Health and Safety Executive.
The salons in the local area that have received the award are Haircut Sir, Toffs Gents' Barbers, Total Beauty, Headway Hair Studio, Top to Toe Hair, First Class Nails Beauty and Training, The Barbour in Colour, Beauty by Vivien, Top to Toe Beauty, and Highlights, all in Goole, as well as Indulgence and Joanne Mahoney in Howden and Visions in Snaith.
The East Riding and Goole colleges are also the first learning providers in the country to gain the award.
Chris Dunnachie, senior environmental health officer for the ERYC, said: "I am so pleased that so many salons in the area have achieved this award, and hope their customers will congratulate them for this."
